The All Stars set to get their stripes

Written by Friday, 06 May 2016 19:30

What do you get when you bring together: a passionate trumpeter, a well-travelled drummer, a musical director turned keyboardist, an experienced bass guitarist, and a songstress who could melt the heart of anyone? Why…Griffith’s very own Funky Friday All Stars, of course!

First Friday Live fans are in for a real treat on Friday 6 May as the All Stars gear up to play some jazz and pop tunes with a little funk planned for later in the evening.

The five-piece ensemble has been created especially to wow First Friday Live audiences and consists of ‘Metro’ band members Lachlan Pendlebury (trumpet/flugelhorn), Livio Mazzon (drums) and Mechlene Nehme (vocals), along with Wagga musicians and members of the band Groove Factorie, keyboardist Dave Wall and bass guitarist Geoff Simpson.

First Friday co-founder Lachlan Pendlebury said, “Each First Friday event seems to have its own special flavour depending on the venue, the act and the audience. That variety keeps it fresh, interesting and makes for a great night out.”

The First Friday All Stars will be appearing at Giuseppe’s Restaurant & Bar at 7.30pm on Friday 6 May.

So you don’t miss out, you can get your tickets at Lesley's of Griffith and Beelbangera General Store until Friday. Or rock up on the night where tickets are available for $15 at the door. The regular lucky door prizes and raffles will be back with prizes to be won. Giuseppe’s menu is available until 9.30pm.

More information about Funky Friday All Stars:

Geoff Simpson has entertained crowds alongside many of Australia’s top artists including country stars Troy Cassar Daley, Adam Harvey and Beccy Cole. A lover of all blues, funk, country, jazz and swing, Geoff currently plays bass guitar for Wagga’s Groove Factorie. His playing style has been described as, “smooth, solid and with great feel.”

Dave Wall has been playing keyboard since the mid-eighties. His keen interest in music combined with his experience, lead him to direct more than a dozen musicals over the past 20 years. Having played with a number of groups around the Wagga area, he now plays keyboard for Groove Factorie. Currently a programmer for Hittrax, Dave’s specialty is in producing Midi and MP3 backing tracks for bands and vocalists.

Flying in fresh from the USA, after immersing himself in the rhythms and soul of jazz in New Orleans and New York, drummer Livio Mazzon will be ready to join his new All Stars members for a night of top tunes. With plenty of band experience between Griffith and Canberra, over a span of 25 years, Livio has stayed true to his passion for jazz, particularly funk and smooth lounge styles. Livio will be playing his beloved Sonor drum kit on the night so keep an ear out for some New York-infused beats.

Lachlan Pendlebury has no shortage of music experience having played a wide variety of styles including: orchestral, wind ensemble, brass band, latin, funk, pop, jazz, swing, big band, and world music. Having completed a Bachelor of Music Education at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Lachlan was selected for the two-year, full-time jazz performance program at the same institution. His passion is fostering young musicians through his work with the Griffith North Public School Band, private brass tuition, and his work as a trumpet tutor for the Department of Education's Performing Arts Unit.

Lead singer of the All Stars, Mechlene Nehme, credits her current vocal sound to Canadian Bill Ladick and his nine-piece funk band, which she experienced while living in Singapore. “There was something about Bill’s energy and knowledge that helped me develop the voice I have now,” Mechlene said.
